It’s Sunday!

Didn’t we just go through Sunday? Well, it’s on a loop and comes by sooner than expected! To put it succinctly, time flies. I made up my mind to have a quiet one today. No intrusions of any kind including my overactive mind.

Tomorrow is going to be a nerve-racking one. I’ll be test-driving the new car and I’m not looking forward to it. The weather is supposed to be rainy so that is not going to help matters much. Last Friday, I went to look at another car. Why? I told you, my mind keeps jumping around and it keeps me on my toes. Look at all that is out there before you make a decision, it says. I agree but pair that with well-meaning people who keep sending me information on what to look out for and yours truly on the Google mode and you’ve got horror in the making! I KNOW what not to buy and that is almost every car! So, now I’ve decided to put Google aside although it keeps begging me to come back, just like cheesecake does. Today, there will be no Googling and no well-meant advice. I’m on my own with my trusted Chachi, the cat, for company.

Monday will come soon enough and I’m not going to sweat bullets, well, I never do but that is besides the point. I will meditate for all I’m worth and go into a quiet space to psych myself up but without thinking too much. Make sense? No? Never mind, I know what it means.

I woke up feeling a little under the weather. It could be my overactive mind playing tricks on me. If I can’t get you through overthinking, let’s try another method! It’s not going to work. I’m going to go test drive that car, get it over with, and come hell or high water I’m determined to do it. I may decide against it afterwards and just have my current car repaired. I DO NOT like changes and that is the pull there.

Today, I have good intentions of being in my safe zone, taking it easy, breathing like a monk, and leaving tomorrow where it belongs. It hasn’t happened yet so why spend time on it. WHY?!! Because I’m wired that way! Okay, deep breath, let it out slowly and here we go into the quiet.

When Silence Speaks

Sometimes we think that silence is just that, a certain quietness where nothing happens. It is a void that is soothing but nothing much comes out of it. I beg to differ. I have found that if you listen carefully, “silence” has much to say.

Quite often when something doesn’t go our way and we are hurt by another’s actions or words, the first reaction is to let it rip. Let it all out and show them how you feel and during those moments, words are aplenty and so are emotions. However, when all is said and done and you are wrung dry, more often than not you realize that you didn’t achieve anything through those outbursts of the unsavory kind.

Maturity doesn’t show up wearing bells and it does not say, “Here I am, take me and use me.” It shows up when you least expect it and when you’ve gone though the growing up process. The one that takes you on the ups and downs, the one where you find yourself down on your knees and the one that shows you there is a better way of doing things without going ballistic. It is the quiet gentle knowledge of knowing that you deserve better and you will move on with grace. No shouting or being loud needed.

Easier said than done? I know because I’ve been there. Things are hard and life is harder still but learning to navigate choppy waters is a must if you want life to let up on you. If something doesn’t go your way, take it in stride. If someone doesn’t choose you, let him or her go. If life isn’t going like it’s supposed to, stop, take note, and then move on knowing that whatever it is that life throws your way, you are fully capable of handling it. Let silence be your guide and your best friend. There is much to be learned during your bout with silence if you’ll only listen.

Not only that, it gives you the ability to get your message across WITHOUT SAYING A WORD!

Try it the next time you want to let someone have what is coming to them or you are chomping at the bit to say your piece. Stop and move in silence.

The Benefits of Meditation

An important quote that speaks to the importance of quieting the mental chatter that runs rampant in our daily lives. Meditation takes us back to the quiet within. It is a practice that tames the mind and one that gives us access to deeper wisdom and intuition.

In Buddhism, “meditation is a core practice that involves training the mind to achieve a state of calmness, clarity, and insight, ultimately leading towards enlightenment and liberation from suffering.”

It has been said that the Buddha meditated for 49 days under the Bodhi tree to gain enlightenment, however, we don’t have to take it to that extreme to reap the benefits. Starting out with 10 minutes a day helps to quiet some of the chatter. I do 30 minutes a day. Find a quiet space, sit down with legs crossed, if that is next to impossible, you can sit with legs outstretched. Close your eyes and go within. Concentrating on the Third Eye Chakra helps to keep unwanted thoughts at bay. They will enter, it’s only normal, acknowledge and let go. Where’s the Third Eye Chakra? It is located in the center of the forehead between the eyebrows. It is said to regulate sleep and some say it has “the ability to see beyond the physical realm and access deeper levels of consciousness.”

All fine and good but my goal is to quiet the mind, give it respite from the constant chatter and to smack it down from the constant negative self-talk as well. Meditation has helped me to do just that. Combine meditation with deep breathing and you have a sleep-inducer of the highest order! Take a deep breath to the count of four and release to the count of six or eight. It works wonders. Don’t get agitated if your mind does hoops and refuses to settle down, given time it will. Patience is required so don’t give up too quickly. I started out with 10 minutes of meditation and have worked my way to 30 minutes a day. It is doable.

Into the Quiet

The sun is shining as it has been for the last two or three days. Dreams of a snow-covered landscape is no longer a reality and if snow is making its way here, it sure is taking its time. I’ve all but given up on it.

The next best thing is sunshine on a clear morning even though the rooftops are frosted white and something tells me it is going to be very very cold out there. It is. No ifs or buts about it. Even though I am bundled up, the cold is finding places where it can creep in to show me just how “freeze your b*tt cold it is!” Heading up the hill and towards the open expanse I call the fields, it is quiet, very QUIET! The crows have gone into hiding although they are “die-hards” and are out in any kind of weather. Not today because they know what’s good for them unlike yours truly!

The ground is frozen with icy patches here and there. Keep your eyes focused I tell myself. One wrong move and it could send me tumbling! Looking around me, I notice that the field is wearing a somber look. Everything is brown and drab with no color to speak of. However, it still has a certain kind of beauty and charm as far as I’m concerned. A quietness that speaks to the soul and calms the mind.

Nothing much is at play today. The herons have taken leave and so have the ducks and the birds. The deer are huddled up in the woods somewhere and today the fields are mine alone except for the planes droning softly in the skies high above. It is a soothing sound and I welcome it as I trudge along, the sound of ice crunching under my feet.

Heading back, I realize that my mind, my overactive mind is sitting back and taking it all in as well. Nature has power and in my case, it has calmed the beast I call my mind and that is not an easy thing to do!
