Concentrating on yourself is of the utmost importance. If you want to live your best life, put yourself first and foremost on that priority list. It starts with YOU and if you can get your act together everything else falls into place and even if it doesn’t, give it time to right itself out. In the meantime you’re standing where you should be and that is at the top of your list.

Each day do what is necessary to get yourself back on track. If you’re down on your knees, stand back up. If all you see is grey clouds and no sunshine, make your own sunshine. Put on a smile, get dressed and go out and shine! Never underestimate the power of a smile, it does wonders for your psyche and your soul. So make sure to wear one even if you don’t feel like it.

Talk to yourself. Tell yourself, “I love you!” Sounds crazy? Not really. Sometimes or rather more often than not, we forget the person we carry around with us. The special someone who stands by us through all our big and little moments of sadness, joy, heartbreak and everything else that goes to make up this life of ours. Show it some LOVE. I’ve started doing this practice of positive self-talk and I say, “I love you,” “I’m thankful for your support,” and “I’m grateful for all the things you do for me.” After I finish I give myself a hug, a make-believe one but a hug nonetheless. This has proved to be an absolute game changer and within a few minutes I feel calmer and “happiness” courses through my whole being. Not always but that is okay too.

Here’s another important point. If you want to live your best life, don’t beat yourself up. You’re beautiful as you are and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise! We are our own worst enemy and I know I am. I often tell myself, “Your hair looks bad today!” Or that little spot on my face has taken gigantic proportions and is now staring back at me with a grin. Sometimes I say, “I just don’t like how I look!” I’m learning to tone down the rhetoric and to be kinder and gentler with myself. These days if someone says, “You look good,” I accept it wholeheartedly without resorting to, “but that’s not what I saw this morning as I looked in the mirror!” Vanity can be a downer at times but learning to accept yourself flaws and all is the way to go.

Sleep, Where Art Thou? (Archives)

Ever laid awake all night and wondered why sleep is evading you?  If you have, you’re not alone.  Say hello to your comrade-in-arms.  It started several months ago.  Out of the blue, my sleepless nights appeared wearing bells and grinning from ear to ear and since then I go to bed with good intentions but alas, “sleep” is nowhere to be found.

After months of feeling like a walking zombie, I started looking for natural remedies to my sleep problems.  I tried yoga and did everything that was asked of me short of turning myself into a pretzel and although yoga helped to keep me pliable like warm taffy, it didn’t help me as far as sleep was concerned.  Next on my list was a warm cup of milk.  Sprinkle some turmeric, stir it around to turn it into a golden delicious liquid and you’re good to go.  Lo and behold, a miracle happened the first time I tried this magic potion.  Half an hour later, I was sleeping like a baby and woke up feeling refreshed like a new-born with nowhere to go.  However, this solution was a one-trick pony.  The following night, this miracle sleep elixir had lost its shine and I was back to square one, looking pretty in my floral pyjamas but I couldn’t lure “sleep” into my bed.

A week later, a friend told me about guided sleep meditation videos on YouTube.  Ah yes, YouTube, the guru on all things wrong with this world.  I decided to give it a try.  I spruced myself up for sleep with YouTube splashed across my TV screen.  Let me tell you, the choices are plenty.  There are videos lasting just 15 minutes and guaranteed to put you to sleep but alas they hadn’t reckoned on me.  I am a tough cookie.  There are also videos that go on for about 1 1/2 hours but by the time I made it to 1/2 an hour, I threw off my blanket in irritation and switched it off.  I was wide-awake and sleep was nowhere to be found.

Finally, I read somewhere that deep breathing helps.  I decided to give this one a go.  What did I have to lose except that bug-eyed look from too little sleep.  I approached it cautiously.  I tried taking 5 deep breaths, each one slowly in through the nose and then out through the mouth.  The trick is to take your time breathing in and out.  After the fifth one, I felt myself relaxing.  Oops, something was definitely happening.  Next, I had to take five more breaths, this time breathe in through the nose, hold for five counts and release through the mouth.  After the third breath, hold and release, I could see my Prince of Sleep approaching slowly.  That night I slept like a well-fed baby.  I tried again the next night and again it sent me off to La La Land in no time at all.  Truthfully though, I have to add that it doesn’t work every night and some nights, it takes a little longer for sleep to appear but this method does work.  I followed this up with the dead man’s pose.  Taken from yoga, this has a propensity to totally relax you.  Here’s how it works.  Lay on your back on the floor or your bed, fully stretched out.  Let yourself go, first relaxing your feet, then your ankles and so on until you reach your head.  Work to let go of thoughts that enter your mind and reel it back in to your breathing.  Easier said then done but with practice, this is a sure fire way to catch some zzz’s.  So if you are like me, sleepless in bed or wherever you’re at, give these two methods a go.

Sleep deprivation or rather not sleeping enough is a big problem.  It affects your health significantly.  Sleep disorders have been linked to other factors such as stress, relationship problems, medical health conditions just to mention a few.  What I do know is that if not treated, this condition can cause memory problems, can affect job performance and cause problems in your relationship.  Some of the solutions I have stated above did not work for me but it might for you.  All I can say is give it a try, who knows it may just be the right remedy for you.

When the sun goes down and you find yourself staring at another day ending and you realize that progress is not being made, hit the “RESET” button. You are not stuck even though it might feel that way at times but you have the power to change whatever it is you want to change in your life. You need the mindset, know what it is you’re after, hit “reset” meaning clear the slate and start over again. .

It is not that simple I know. In fact, it might be one of the hardest things you’ll have to do because changing your mindset is not easy and it is not simple either. Old habits die hard and sometimes they are hard to give up because there is comfort in hanging on to things that feel comfortable even if in reality they are not. Laziness, putting out the least effort possible and waiting for the world to reward you for nothing in particular is not going to work and it has never worked.

It takes YOU to change your place in the world. Where you stand, how high or low you are in the grand scheme of things all depends on you but one thing is clear, progress needs hard work. It means falling down a few more times than you wanted to but always keeping your eyes on the prize. If you want that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, you’ve got to go after it. It is human nature to want to make life simple but it has other plans for us. Life is about learning from your mistakes, saying “no” to easy and knowing that you’ve got to throw yourself into “hard” to make it happen. Falling down is part and parcel of this thing called life but standing back up and moving forward gives you another chance, another opportunity to reach your end goal. You need to be better and you need to set yourself apart from the ordinary to make it. Sparkles and sunshine sounds good but it is going to take grit and determination to get you there.

Hitting “reset” and doing the same old things over and over again is not going to do it either. You need to “refocus” to get things going again. If something is not working, focus on what it is and change it. Try different angles and attitudes and at some point you’ll get it right, at least I hope I will at some point in time. Until then, I’ll hit “reset” as many times as I need to and I’ll tell the “victim mentality” I carry around with me which keeps me from achieving my goals to hit the door as well!

So if you’re standing where I have been many many times before and watching the sun set on another fruitless day, hit “RESET.” Tomorrow is on its way, it’s a new day to work your magic on a blank slate and to have your name written there as a success story. It’s all up to you.

JUST BREATHE!

It’s Sunday, a day for rest and relaxation or at least it’s supposed to be. I wanted to sleep in but Chachi, the cat, had other plans. In a cat’s world there is no such thing as a Sunday I suppose so it was time to get up and get going! Where to? Nowhere special, he wanted to go downstairs to his window seat to watch his world come alive and so I must follow whether I want to or not! He’s got me trained and I thought I was doing such a great job raising him.

The weather is drizzly, cold and damp. Nothing to brag about and no walking out in the fields either. I need to keep the “monkey” which I call my brain in check so here I am back to writing to get my mind to settle down.

We never give it much thought but breathing is a powerhouse. It does so much to keep us in check, to help us relax and to see things with a clearer vision. My plan for today is to keep breathing, not the in and out variety which we do unthinkingly but the kind that helps me to relax. I am going to try some deep breathing combined with meditation to see where it takes me. Here are some quotes on breathing to bring the focus back to where you need to be if life has you scrambling to survive whatever it is that has got you that way.

Good Vibes

Dictionary.com defines good vibes as a “slang phrase for the positive feelings given off by a person, place or situation.” When good vibes are present you feel positive emotions or rather you radiate trust, love and kindness to those around you.

I can agree with the genuine smile part. Sharing smiles is a part of my DNA and if we share eye-contact, a smile is the first thing you’ll see before we even exchange a word. There is nothing wrong with sharing a smile with strangers. Who knows you might have changed their day for the better and it didn’t cost anything to do so.

However, today ‘good vibes’ was the furthest thing on my mind. Something didn’t go quite right yesterday and it triggered an emotional response which filled me with agitation and that is putting it mildly. Afterwards, I wanted to make it right but I had to give it time so I tossed and turned all night and woke up with a big chip on my shoulder and not quite ready to blow it off. I have to keep moving to stop the overthinking I told myself. I put on my old sweats, the rattiest I could find to exaggerate how I was feeling, bundled my hair on my head and looking like a nightmare, I decided to do a thorough cleaning of the bedroom especially when I could see the dust bunnies grinning at me daring me to touch them. I got all the necessary stuff ready and a big bowl of water to wipe everything clean. Good vibes at this point was nowhere to be seen! Cleaning was and is not my favorite chore but it was one way to drown out my mind so I got ready to tackle the impossible. Just as I was getting ready to start, Chachi the cat walks in, takes one look at the big bowl of water and looks at me as if to say, “What’s the pool doing in the middle of the room mom?” That was enough to light up my eyes, put a smile on my face and to bring the good vibes rushing back in. Just an example of how little it takes to change the mood in an instant if only you’re ready and willing to let it.

The day took off on a better note afterwards and I had a clean bedroom to boot. The problem was still there but it didn’t need to fill my whole day and neither did it have the power to destroy my mood, my day and my good vibes. Woke up this morning with my cat, Chachi, next to me. He had made himself comfortable next to my head and was purring softly as he heard the movement that signaled, it was time to get up. The purring notched up a few decibels as he moved closer to me. It was a sound I loved, not too soft and not too loud, just a perfect soothing all-around droning that seemed to calm my just awakening mind, body and soul.

It was Sunday and time to relax but my mind was on the ‘go’ mode and there was no stopping it. I laid there under the warm covers and my mind immediately moved to the conversation I had last night. The person was trying to give me feedback on one of my articles. More specifically, the one called, “Change Your Strategy.” He said, “well-written, true but hard to do.” I agree whole-heartedly with him. Change is never easy and putting in steps to change what always is the norm is definitely “hard.” No one said it was going to be easy but it needs to be done in order to change something that is not working to something that could change your life for the better. He understood that perfectly but for the change mindset to work, it has to be put in motion and that is the hard part. Most of us think of changing but it never takes off.

See what I mean? My mind was up and running even before my body decides to move a muscle! Nothing new there, most days it (my mind) takes control and I go along for the ride!

After several tries from an impatient Chachi to get me out of bed, he took off to the kitchen and I followed slowly, very slowly. I got the water going for coffee, gave my little sweetheart a kiss on the forehead which earned me another slew of purrs and love-struck eyes. Peering out into the darkness, I could see that fall had definitely taken hold. It looked dark and gloomy but each time I turned away to get a cup or to get breakfast going, I noticed that it got a shade lighter as if by magic. Not all once but slowly as if someone was using a brush to paint in the lightness painstakingly with each stroke and before I knew it and within a short span of time, it was so much lighter that I could see the silhouette of the houses across the street and a still dark but pearl grey sky peering back at me. Just like life I thought. It happens when you’re not looking.

Making my way back up the stairs with breakfast on a tray, I realized that my knee was feeling better. I had injured it a few days ago, not sure how but there was no doubt in my mind that I had done something to it. I work out seven days a week and often forget that I am no longer a spring chicken. I still jump, kick and do 60 minute workouts to the detriment of my joints. Most days I can keep up with the best of those in the thirties BUT now and than my body reminds me to back off as it did a few days ago. Human nature is such that we refuse to accept the inevitable until life in its wisdom decides to show us why it is a necessity to do so. Staying off my feet is not easy, I am raring to go and to kick butt as far as workouts are concerned but today I am planning a light, very light workout that will give my injured knee some well-earned rest. Not for long though, I am planning a long walk tomorrow. Like I said, human nature has its quirks, pair it with stupidity and you know why we face the difficulties we do.

Breakfast was done and my mind was doing its monkey dance again. I tend to live in my headspace so that jumping from one topic to the next is easy to do. However, that quiet, private, contemplative mood or frame of mind or even hectic and chaotic is ok once in a while but when it takes over 24/7, it’s time to shut it down.

My day is just starting. Nature had done its magic outside, it is bright and beautiful with the added promise of a beautiful day ahead. It’s time for ‘mommy and Chachi’ day to take off. He loves playing chase but that’s an absolute no no for today. I hope he’ll settle for loads of kisses and cuddles. I’m sure he will, he’s easy that way. It doesn’t take much to make him happy unlike ‘humans’ who make it complicated. Not taking off on an another topic although….

Suddenly my phone goes ping and there is this message from a friend and it says, “I had a restless night, had too many thoughts in my head.” Instantly I wanted to jump right in with Max Goodwin’s words from New Amsterdam, “How can I help?” Nope, not doing it today, maybe later, much later but it’s time for that monkey I call my mind to take a well-deserved break.
