I’m Not Feeling Well!

Photo by Jason Renfrow Photography on Pexels.com

This is an excuse my ex uses to his advantage. He has been using it for a long time now. The man is not only a cheater, a liar, and an all-around two-timer, he pulls out this one card every time he doesn’t feel like doing something.

The man doesn’t realize that “crying wolf” too many times doesn’t work to his advantage. He is very intelligent, a physicist, and anything to do with science he has a handle on but when it comes to the social stuff and how you should handle people he is clueless!

“I’m not feeling well,” is his get out of jail free card so to speak. I know it well, I’ve lived with it for a long time picking up the slack when he was too busy pretending to be sick and galavanting to his heart’s content. No, he is not a good person. What did I see in him? Nothing much at first but he was quite good at pulling the wool over my eyes that I believed every word he said.

Coming back to the question at hand. This is his best excuse and the one he uses often. It means he is too sick to do anything he doesn’t want to do. The problem is, his son is catching up on what this is about as well. The ex was supposed to do something important, had promised (he never keeps his promises), but at the last minute backed out using his worn and tattered card once again. “I’m not feeling well.” The son finds out that he is well enough to go on vacation with his current fling. Anger? Yes, he feels it and so do I. However, there is nothing much you can do with someone who is remorseless and is all about himself.

It takes work on my part to cool the situation down which I have been doing for a long time now. This doesn’t mean I don’t feel the anger, the hurt, and the pain my son feels. There is not much I can do about that GUY! I can only see what I can do to make my son feel that he is important because he is far from feeling that at the moment.

“I’m not feeling well.”

To cry wolf means “to raise a false alarm or give unnecessary warnings.” It also destroys your credibility of which he has none I might add. One day when an actual emergency arises, no one will believe a word he says and that day couldn’t come soon enough!

Now that I’ve had a full-on vent session, I’m feeling so much better!

Next question please……

The Hard Years

Photo by RDNE Stock project on Pexels.com

It was hands down the time during the breakup of my marriage. I didn’t know “HARD” until then. I was caught between a rock and a hard place and there was no escaping the pain, the confusion, the insecurities, and the feelings of loneliness that followed.

The adulterous affair he had tore our marriage apart but I think it started way before that. Success got to his head and arrogance did the rest. The problem was I was still caught up in being his wife and mother to our little boy. I didn’t see it coming. When it did I was broken beyond belief. Should I walk away? Can we mend what was broken? What about trust? Can I ever trust him again? That last part gave me the answers to my other questions. I couldn’t and without trust we were going nowhere. Divorce was next on the line. It was a very painful time because I believed in forevers and “forever” was lying in pieces around my feet along with my broken heart.

The thing that got me through the ordeal was my little boy. I saw the pain every time he looked at us. His world was changing and he wanted it to remain the same. However, there was no going back. I became his rock in more ways than one. His father was off and running. Any woman was fair game and we were left on the backburner or rather as an afterthought.

I took on the role of mom and dad and I stood by my boy like a lioness guarding her cub. Did it lessen his pain? I don’t think so but it did help him to know that he was loved and no matter what I was there for him.

The “angel” walked in after that and slowly but surely, I learned to stand back up again. No, I wasn’t fully healed, that took a long time and I couldn’t love him like he wanted. Every time he got close, I shut the door behind me! The thing about him was that he had both feet in and wasn’t about to leave. He stayed until it was his time to go. He showed me there is better out there. The kind of love that doesn’t take you for granted, the kind of love that doesn’t buckle at the slight suggestion of a storm, and the kind of love that didn’t ask but was willing to give selflessly. The sad thing, I wasn’t ready to accept it at the time.

I call him “my angel” because I truly believe that he was sent in to help me find my way again. He got me through the “the hard years” and just when I was finding my feet again, he left. His job was done.

The Helicopter Has Crashed!

Photo by Edu Raw on Pexels.com

The definition of a helicopter mom is, “a mother who takes an overprotective or excessive interest in the life of her child or children.” Furthermore, “helicopter parents are so named because, like helicopters, they hover overhead, overseeing every aspect of their child’s life.” Guilty as charged!

My son, the one and only, has managed to do well. He has finished his studies and after landing two jobs but not to his liking, he has landed his dream job or so it seems. He is going into his third month and according to him, “Work is good.” That’s about as much as I can get out of him these days. Just short answers that don’t tell me a thing! I WANT MORE! Yes folks, the helicopter is going down fast and it is not going to be up there anytime soon and it probably never will again.

He’s on the way and keeping everything close to his chest. The problem is I am having a hard time with being fed just morsels! The first time it happened, I thought I would go crazy not knowing where he was, how he was doing, and especially when the trains stopped running and he was left to find his way home on his own! I had to learn to deal with that.

It got easier as time went on. The less he told me, the more I believed that he was alright and doing well. It was my way of surviving the inevitable. He was a young adult and he was ready to fly the coop and mom just had to deal with it. Then I wouldn’t hear from him for a few days and I would ask my ex if he had heard from him. “No, I haven’t heard from him for about a week now.” What?!! That set all the alarm bells going and needed looking into! When he was good and ready, he wrote me a few words, the emphasis being on few! “All good.”

I am writing this because he has a move coming up next weekend. He is moving to his new apartment and he will be able to have his cats with him. I thought it would take place the moment he moved in but I was told from a third source, the ex, that he has a two or three week business trip coming up and it can only happen after he comes back. Why didn’t he tell me?!! The helicopter is going down fast.

He just wrote a few minutes ago saying, “Packing.” I thought he was talking about the move coming up. Nope, he was talking about a trip coming up next week and he will be gone for a week. Where is he going? He doesn’t want to say and I have to step back and not push. The helicopter has CRASHED!!!

I see the same thing with a girlfriend. She has a ten-year-old and she does it one better than me. She is up there flying the skies and I wish I can go back to the times when I knew anything and everything like she does!

The thing is I have to accept that he is growing up fast and is leading a life of his own. So far, he has done well on his own and I will trust that I’ve brought him up well and he knows what he is doing.

By the way, that “helicopter” did a good job of raising the kid!

Have an amazing day.

The Three Fates

I picked this book up not really knowing much about Nora Roberts. Romance novels were my thing and when I came across this title, I wasn’t sure what it was about and I knew even less about the author at that time.

Little did I know that I was in for a surprise and of the best kind. The book captured all my senses hook, line, and sinker! Not many books do that. It wasn’t a historical novel or a classic, but it packed a punch and how! I couldn’t put it down and I read it from cover to cover in a very short amount of time. Then I went looking for more of her books and she had plenty.

Who is Nora Roberts? She is an American romance novelist and she is one of the most successful and prolific authors of the genre. I love her writing, it draws you in, it captivates, and it keeps you there wanting more. Roberts received the lifetime achievement award from the Romance Writers of America.

My first introduction to this writer was through the book I mentioned above. Irish siblings Malachi, Gideon, and Rebecca Sullivan try to acquire three heirlooms that were stolen. This chase takes them across continents and the intriguing plot with romance thrown in keeps readers more than engaged. I became a fan after reading this book and I think I own most of her books as well.

It was an unassuming title but the book completely surprised me. The writing was superb and the storyline fascinating. She has a knack for romance and she does it like no other writer I have known. Well, Danielle Steele comes close but I like Nora Roberts better. Just a matter of taste I suppose.

A Random Encounter

Photo by Mikhail Nilov on Pexels.com

I don’t remember his name but it is not important. The meeting took place while I was in high school. He was the caretaker’s son and I met him one day during break time. We were playing some silly game and there he was sitting on a bench staring into space. I recall the smile on his face as he sensed my presence. It was big and bold and somehow didn’t quite fit that small face. I stopped and stared and he said, “Hello!” and that was the beginning.

He was born blind and his eyes looked clouded like there was a veil over them. I was fascinated by them and we talked for a while. The friendship took off and everyday at break time, I was at his place asking questions and listening to him play the piano. One day he played this beautiful melody and called it my song. He had dreams of being a famous pianist and I could see him achieve that dream. He was very talented. We talked about many things and I think I was the only friend he had. Some days after school, I would practice walking around the house with my eyes closed just to see what it felt like to be him. Summer rolled around and there was a break for some time. When school started back up, I couldn’t wait to see him again. The bench where he usually sat was empty. I looked around and there was no sign of him. Then his mother told me he was gone. I didn’t know what that meant at the time but I felt the pain of losing a friend.

Looking back, it was the awakening of compassion and empathy within me. I didn’t know him well but there was a definite connection between us. A chance meeting that would change my life for the better. I would go on to help others but it all began right there when compassion took hold for a fellow human being and empathy did the rest.

The Publishing Journey

It is not just about writing the book, spending hours and hours on end putting it together, getting lost in a world where magic happens, but then comes the question, “What to do with it?” after it is done and finished.

The search began for a publisher who would love my book and give it a chance. I had two offers. One a mega publisher and the other a smaller children’s book publisher. I went with the big one thinking my book would be in good hands. Thinking and the reality are two different things but that’s for another time.

Publishing took a long time as did the illustrations and the back and forth with the publisher. There were times when I was absolutely frustrated and other times when I thought they were doing a good job. The day I had been waiting for came and I got the message that the publishing day was just around the corner! There was a certain sense of euphoria I can’t explain. I was on cloud nine but nervous at the same time. Will it make it? It was a question that kept doing rounds in my head. Then I saw the finished product and I was happy and not so happy. There were certain things that did not set too well. The book size for one thing. The cover was eye-catching and I liked that part.

I had a book out there! The publisher wrote saying, “Success of the book depends on you.” Hmm….I wasn’t sure what that meant. What do I do now? It was hard work getting the visibility that was needed to bump the book up from under millions of titles. Daunting? Yes. Then there was the question of ratings and reviews. In the beginning, it was mostly 5-stars and I was floating around. It was doing well, this little book of mine. However, I came falling back to earth when the first not so good review knocked me off my pedestal! I was irritated, frustrated and I wanted to reply but was told that silence is the best approach. I kept my cool and more reviews started coming in, mostly 5-stars and that one review that still bugs me was relegated to a space at the bottom rung of the ladder.

I still wake up some mornings and rush to see if the book is doing fine. When I see that it is, I breathe a sigh of relief and that, my friends, is more than irritating to say the least. I’m talking about my dependence on a book to bring my mood up or to bring it all the way down. I’ve decided that I’ve done my part and the book will do just fine. I will help it along but if it is a good book, it will find its way.

The sequel is finished and has been accepted. I want to wait a while before I go through the same process again. NOW, I just need a movie producer to pick the book up and to turn it into a hit! Any takers?

The Excellent Adventures of Honey and Hubie

When I sat down to write The Excellent Adventures of Honey and Hubie, I wanted to capture the kind of day every child secretly hopes for: the day when the world opens up beyond the garden fence and you discover that courage and friendship live inside you. Honey, the little Italian greyhound, begins the story very much like many of us do—safe, loved, and yet quietly restless.

She has a warm home, caring owners, and a familiar routine, but her heart is tugged by the idea that there might be “something more” just beyond the fence. Hubie, her bright green frog friend in a pirate hat, is that “something more” come to life: he is curiosity, mischief, and optimism all rolled into one.

As Honey follows Hubie out of the garden, the story becomes a journey through all the magic I remember from my own childhood walks in the woods: talking animals, music in the trees, and tiny folk who live in unexpected places. Along the way Honey meets the Buttercup Fairies, joins the Moppets’ grand celebration, learns to swim with the help of a graceful swan, and even helps
rescue baby Carmelia from the fearsome Screeches. Each encounter is meant to feel like a small, complete adventure, but they all circle back to one idea: we grow braver and kinder when we step outside our comfort zone for the sake of someone else.

At the heart of the book is the friendship between Honey and Hubie. They tease, they disagree, and they frighten each other at times, but when real danger appears, Honey finds herself willing to risk everything to protect her friend.

That moment—when a quiet, uncertain little dog stands up to a threatening Screech—is the true center of the story. Hubie later tells her that real
friendship is when you care so deeply for someone that you would give your life for theirs without thinking of your own. I wanted young readers to see that bravery doesn’t always roar; sometimes it looks like a trembling friend who refuses to run away.

The book is dedicated to my son, and that dedication is very real. I wrote this story hoping that he, and children everywhere, would never lose their sense of fantasy, because it is where compassion, courage, and creativity first learn to walk.

Honey ends the day muddy, tired, and smelling like a skunk, but she is also changed: she has danced, swum, rescued, laughed, and learned what true friendship feels like. It is not a “perfect” ending, but a perfectly honest one—a
reminder that the best days are often a little messy, a little risky, and filled with memories that last long after the bathwater runs clear.

A Fresh Look at The Excellent Adventures of Honey and Hubie by T. J. Mueller

I recently spent a quiet afternoon reading The Excellent Adventures of Honey and Hubie, and I wasn’t expecting it to charm me the way it did. I thought it would be a simple children’s story, but there’s something genuinely special about the way this book blends imagination with gentle life lessons.

The first thing that caught my attention was how naturally the author brings her characters to life. Honey, the miniature greyhound with an enormous amount of heart, instantly feels like a character children can connect with. And Hubie — the bright green frog with a rainbow stripe down his back — adds a playful energy that makes their friendship feel real and endearing.

What surprised me most is how effortlessly the story invites readers into its world. The places Honey and Hubie explore feel almost dreamlike, yet grounded enough for kids to picture themselves right beside the characters. The mix of magical creatures and simple moments gives the book a comforting balance of excitement and warmth.

As I read, I kept thinking about how well the book captures the emotions children experience when they try new things — curiosity, nervousness, bravery, and the joy of succeeding. Nothing is overexplained or forced; the story lets kids understand these feelings through Honey’s journey. That’s something not many children’s books manage to do well.

The writing has a soft, comforting rhythm, which makes it especially nice for a bedtime read. You can pause between scenes and talk with kids about what they think Honey or Hubie might do next. It’s the kind of story that naturally encourages conversation and imagination, without feeling like a “lesson book.”

Knowing a bit about T. J. Mueller’s background makes the story even more meaningful. You can sense her deep connection to nature and childhood wonder in every page. Her writing feels sincere — not polished to perfection, but honest and full of heart. It reminded me of the kinds of stories that stay with children long after they’ve grown.

If you’re looking for a children’s book that blends adventure, gentle messages, and a big dose of imagination, this one is definitely worth picking up. It has that timeless feeling that makes you want to revisit it again — not just for kids, but for the adults who read along with them.

Honey, the Greyhound

I saw this review online and it was a good one. It also said that the book was a “potential classic in the making.” That is a huge compliment. I’ve read all the classics from Charlotte’s Web, Peter Pan, The Wizard of Oz and the list goes on and on. Those are timeless classics, beautiful stories that have the power to capture your imagination and to stay with you long after the story is finished.

This is what the review said:

“The Excellent Adventures of Honey and Hubie is a children’s book that receives positive ratings for its heartwarming and imaginative story about friendship, courage, and kindness. Reviewers describe it as enchanting, with themes that emerge naturally and encourage emotional intelligence and creative thinking. The book is considered a potential classic, perfect for storytime that blends fun and fantasy with meaningful lessons for children aged 10-12.

Here’s the background on Honey, the miniature greyhound. I met Honey when I was an undergrad and my boyfriend at the time brought her over. She was a rescue who had been badly abused and shivered all the time. One evening, we were sitting on the couch watching TV with Honey and Twitty (my cat at the time) sitting between us. Not thinking, I reached over to stroke Twitty on the head and that’s when Honey went for my nose and nipped it, not too gently either! That nip broke the skin and caused some bleeding. It was a mad dash to the ER where they checked me out and I got a Tetanus shot. No major damage was done but hence my fear of dogs. A short time after that, I had this idea in my head and I started putting it together with Honey as one of the main characters in my book. Why? I don’t really know. I guess I felt sorry for her.

What about Hubie? I had a fascination where frogs were concerned. My childhood days were spent looking for them in the streams and little creeks around my place. Once I came across a pond hidden deep in the woods and there were several rainbow-colored frogs in the water and some were sunning themselves on the rocks. I know now that they could have been poisonous, back then I only saw the beauty of the colors on their back. Lo and behold, Hubie was in the making!

It’s interesting how some things take hold and out of an imaginative mind comes a story that has the ability to capture the imagination of young minds and to keep them captivated. It seems that this book is doing just that. Unbelievable though it is, as an author it puts a smile on my face.
